New build garage and garage conversion in Hertford

The team at R&J Build were called in to take care of a new build garage project, along with a garage conversion in Hertford, in the small suburb of Bengeo. While the client already had a garage, they wanted to convert this space to add a family room to the main house, with a new build garage being created on the other side of the property on some unused ground.

Project objectives

The key objective was to convert the original garage into an extension of the main living space, creating a roomy and comfortable family room, and to build a new garage to take the original one’s place.

As with all of our extension and conversion projects, our aim is to make sure the new elements look like they’re part of the original building, which thanks to the careful sourcing of matching bricks by our bricklayer, we’ve achieved incredibly well here.

New build and conversion services we provided

The services we provided for this combined new build and garage conversion in Hertford included:

Newly built garage complete with remote control shutter door, plus internal charging point for the clients’ electric/hybrid car.
Garage conversion required removal of doors, cutting and tootling out brickwork and installation of new wooden windows to match the existing ones in the house.
Internally we insulated the walls, floor and ceiling and applied an immaculate sand and cement screed.
Installation of electrical points, spotlights, radiators, dry lining, all plastering works, skirting boards, architraves, floor coverings and all decorating.

The most challenging part of this new build and conversion project was to get a mains electrical cable from the original garage to the new one, 30 metres away. We dug a 600mm deep trench and connected new cable to original incoming mains. In the new garage, the new cable was fed into a new consumer unit/fuse board to provide the required power.
